Jalyn Records, a Dayton, Ohio label founded by bluegrass legend Jack Lynch, is returning after decades of dormancy. Operating out of his own apartment on Brown Street from the early 1960s through the late 1970s, Lynch recorded local pickers and major names alike — including Ralph Stanley and Don Reno — producing hard-driving bluegrass, country, and gospel music. The catalog has now been carefully remastered and is being released digitally on its original label for the first time.
Among the label's artists is the vocal group The First Southern Quartet, formed in 1961 with its original lineup: Paul Fox (guitar, lead vocals), R. A. Wagers (tenor), and Russell Van Winkle (guitar, baritone) — all three raised in Kentucky. They were later joined by Virginia-born, Kentucky-raised Kelly Caudill, who added bass vocals and lead guitar. All members belong to the First Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, Indiana, and became known throughout Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky for their gospel music, which they approach primarily as an act of religious devotion.
