Sam Rosenthal, founder of the label Projekt and the group Black Tape For A Blue Girl, has released a new solo album, THE WIDTH OF SHADOWS — his first work of electronic ambient-drone music since 2015's AS LONELY AS DAVE BOWMAN: MONOLITH. The album began as a collection of scattered, "orphaned" tracks but evolved into a cohesive 49-minute statement: a minimalist soundscape of dark corners, hidden solitude, rippling cosmic waves of shadow, and time-warped transmissions of barren feeling.
Two previously released tracks anchor the record: the opener "Sunflow" (2024) and the penultimate, title-giving "The Width of Shadows" (2002). The rest of the material came from Rosenthal digging through five years of abandoned ideas and radically reworking them.
He frames his method through Abstract Expressionism: unlike the "Romantic Realism" of his vocal work in Black Tape For A Blue Girl, here he deliberately abandoned perfectionism, inspired by his experience making the Nova Cat Purring Sounds album series. He found old, forgotten fragments, ruthlessly restructured them, added new synth textures and processing, and felt no loyalty to the pieces' original ideas. Deliberately not tracking the notes or chords he played, he layered parts, blurred them with reverb, and cut away everything unnecessary until only the right undertone and feeling remained — merging the gestural spontaneity of Action Painting with the contemplative quality of Color Field.
The result, THE WIDTH OF SHADOWS, is an immersion in longing and spacious, meditative reflection amid vast, mysterious sonic resonances.
