At the heart of the project lies the ancient image of Penelope, weaving and unweaving her loom while she waits — a metaphor for patient labour as a way of holding onto order amid chaos. From this impulse grew the album "Every Day I Weave on the Great Loom": an attempt to build a safe haven echoing the fantastical landscapes of artist Márton Tóth, a refuge constructed slowly and painstakingly through the daily ritual of work and craft.
The record was released on the North Carolina-based independent label sound as language, and is a joint experimental work by the duo Plume Girl and Home Baker — life and musical partners based in Austin, Texas. Sowmya Somanath, performing as Plume Girl, is a Hindustani-American vocalist working at the intersection of Hindustani and Carnatic traditions with a subtle pop melodicism; her voice carries an almost seraphic clarity over dense, flickering textures. Walter Nichols, known as Home Baker, plays an electronic wind instrument (EWI), grounding the music with a tactile, physical presence. Both the voice and the EWI are routed through the Bastl Thyme digital tape machine, which processes, delays, and loops the sound, stretching the compositions into a vast, nearly boundless space.
Despite this sonic expansiveness, the album retains a sense of wholeness and continuity: each movement is shaped by patience and an intuitive understanding between the two musicians, so the work feels both intimately woven and endlessly ongoing — much like the myth of Penelope itself.
