Paolo Benvegnù — Hermann (2011) is the third solo studio album by cult Italian singer-songwriter Paolo Benvegnù (former frontman of the indie rock band Scisma), released on February 18, 2011. It is a monumental conceptual work, often hailed by critics as one of the pinnacles of the contemporary Italian alternative scene.
Benvegnù described Hermann as "a soundtrack to a film of the same name that was never made." The album's 13 tracks form a unified cinematic narrative, exploring the history, evolution, and spiritual decline of humanity through the lens of myth, literature, and philosophy.
The album's title refers to the figure of "man in general" (the word "Hermann" is consonant with the German Herr Mann, meaning "Mr. Man," or "Human," meaning "human"). The album's sound is dense, dramatic, and refined: melancholic piano and strings intertwine with sharp indie-rock guitars and Benvenue's deep, almost declamatory vocals. The lyrics are filled with complex metaphors referencing Western intellectual culture.
