While with his main band, The Green Pajamas, Jeff Kelly often created large-scale, richly arranged psychedelic canvases with references to 1960s pop culture, his solo work is a much more hidden, domestic, and intimate world. "Ash Wednesday Rain" was recorded primarily in Kelly's home studio. The music has a characteristically soft, warm, yet slightly melancholy sound. The arrangements are deliberately minimalist: most of the compositions are based on acoustic guitar, complemented by subtle keyboard pads, percussion, and Jeff's melancholy vocals.
