DJ Spanish Fly - Cadillac Warning (2026)

Memphis rap pioneer DJ Spanish Fly is in the crosshairs for 10 tracks of low-slung, unreleased rudeness hailing his archetypal ‘90s canon and heavy influence on Three 6 Mafia, Tommy Wright III, and the sound of modern rap at large.

It’s hard to overstate the impact of DJ Spanish Fly’s formula of 808s and bedroom bars on successive waves of rappers since the mid ‘90s. Cited as a key touchstone for Memphis, TN greats such as Juicy J ov Three 6 Mafia - “DJ Spanish Fly and another guy by the name of Sonny D were like the Memphis pioneers of rap music. I looked at them as mentors…We followed in the footsteps of those guys” - Fly’s beats would sow the seeds for everything from horror to gangster rap, crunk, grime and modern drill via underground bootleg tapes which spread from Memphis to Afro-American power centres such as Atlanta and NOLA via holidaymakers and those in the know. In the following years his stripped-to-fundamentals approach sparked myriad emulations as rap sea-changed from sample-based to original production, and effectively assumed its current forms.

For the last decade he's been hosting a regular show on NTS and in 2022, PAN issued 'Oh Word Mixtape Vol. 1', balancing his new material with classic vintage gear. And somehow he's never been more relevant. Sure, in the '90s his subwoofer-friendly mixtapes steered Tennessee's dominant rap subculture, inspiring DJ Paul and Juicy J long before they went Platinum, but now his jittery percussion and scrappily recorded husky-voiced raps have been recycled so many times they're an almost ubiquitous facet of online subculture, vibrating through cloud rap, phonk and drift music - even Brazil's funk automotivo.

Untitled (Recs) imprint steps up with a long overdue next chapter, putting together a tape of Spanish Fly's most vital archival finds: versions of legendary mixtape-famous cuts like 'Gittin Away Wit Da Medicine' and 1987's foundational 'Rollin' in my Cadillac' plus material that even the most dedicated digger will be surprised to hear. And 'Who's The Man' gets the album started with all the right ingredients; the usual snappy drum machine beat is eased along by slippery oscillations, explosion samples, chipmunked words and a tinny, G-funk-esque monosynth lead that's way more effective than it should be. But although his production's been important, its his charismatic, lo-fi delivery that might be his real legacy, establishing Memphis as the home of a certain type of larger-than-life character years before 'Hustle & Flow' made it global.

"I be known playa, I'm like the mayor," he spits on 'Jealous' over plasticky strings and toybox piano vamps. "See me in courthouse is very rare / Lawyers and judges boy, they ain't fair / Tryna get you fried - electric chair." These stories resonated with a local community who felt completely marginalized culturally, seemingly unseen as onlookers focused on the two coasts. Spanish Fly was an avatar, a familiar voice who told tangible truths, adding so much flair that you could almost visualize the ride, the outfit and the back of dollar bills. "I'm gonna let you in on the deal," he mutters cagily on 'Badguy', and you almost believe him. No matter how many artists try to replicate this sound, there's only one DJ Spanish Fly.
