South Carolina-based bluegrass band Backline releases its ten-track album Turning New Ground on July 17 via Mountain Fever Records (29:39). The record was produced by founding member Katelyn Ingardia (guitar, vocals) and Jeff Partin (dobro, guitar, vocals), and recorded in Georgia.
The album carries a rural, mountain-music spirit typical of bluegrass — largely upbeat, though never fiery, instead building its energy gradually and deliberately. Echoes of The Cox Family's tradition and, in places, Alison Krauss's style come through, though Katelyn Ingardia's satiny, soft voice is less whispery than Krauss's, distinguished instead by an impressive range and phrasing.
The opening trio — "No Sense In That," "Not All Roads," and the pensive "Reaping the Blues" — sets the tone with earthy material sung in Katelyn's smooth voice. "Money" stands out for its skillful picking, "Just Country" leans toward a more mainstream country sound closer to Krauss's style, while "Cold Water" and "Heartbreak Express" sound entirely distinctive — not like any other act in the genre, but instead forming the band's own signature sound, on which Katelyn outdoes herself.
