A group of German students, shaken by the scale of deaths among migrants crossing the Mediterranean, decide they can no longer stand by as bystanders. Pooling their efforts and their own money, they buy an old ship and convert it into a rescue vessel, setting out to sea themselves to pull migrants from sinking boats. Their project grows out of Jugend Rettet, the real-life youth activist movement that took on a task its members felt states and major organizations were failing to fulfill. But their enthusiasm and youthful idealism quickly collide with the harsh logic of the open sea: storms, political pressure, bureaucratic obstacles, and moral dilemmas impossible to foresee. Director Markus Goller frames the story as a coming-of-age chronicle set against crisis — a portrait of a generation for whom compassion becomes a form of resistance. Composer Volker Bertelmann, reuniting with Goller after "La montagne aux secrets," writes a score that holds the tension between intimate emotion and the stark drama of the open sea, mirroring both the characters' fragility and the weight of the historical moment they act within.
