On the farming outskirts of Northern Ghana, in makeshift studios built from little more than a phone and a laptop, a genre took shape that fuses ancient Dagomba rhythms with the language of modern club music. Producer Mohamed "Ebony" Fuseini recorded traditional drum parts directly on his phone, then rebuilt them in FL Studio, layering dense percussion, hypnotic trance loops and thick autotune over slinky VST synths. The result was a reinvented version of simpa — a traditional Dagomba dance — repurposed for the local video market: VCD clips sold in the markets of the Dagbon region were paired with explicit dance scenes, itself a modest cultural provocation in the conservative Muslim society of Northern Ghana. Ebony worked closely with flashy village vocalists known as Gawani, and with local video producers, turning a grassroots craft into a full-fledged scene of its own. A decade on, this music has been gathered for listeners outside the region for the first time: the compilation brings together the genre's leading artists — Dickson Gawani, Bala Zaaku, Yaa Naara and others — whose songs range widely in theme, from sharp political commentary to ancestral warrior-clan rhythms. The release comes with extensive liner notes by journalist Morgan Greenstreet, featuring artist interviews, cultural-historical context and song translations.
