Punk quartet The Menzingers — Greg Barnett, Tom May, Eric Keen, and Joe Godino — marked their twentieth anniversary as a band with the release of their ninth studio album, Everything I Ever Saw, out July 17 via Epitaph Records. For the first time in their career, they recorded at home in South Philadelphia, the neighborhood they've lived in for nearly two decades, working at longtime producer Will Yip's brand-new studio. The familiar surroundings, favorite local restaurants and bars, made for a relaxed, joyful recording process that Barnett says comes through in the music itself.
The album grew out of two contrasting personal stories: while Barnett got married and became a father for the first time, his bandmate Tom May went through a divorce. That mix of joy and loss, beginnings and endings, runs through the whole record, from emotionally charged punk rock to softer, more reflective moments.
The album's title comes from its title track, which Barnett considers its truest distillation. The band had long leaned toward calling the record "Chance Encounters," but ultimately settled on "Everything I Ever Saw," a phrase that better captures the album's central idea: the importance of living in the present, especially during life's biggest turning points. Constant touring had long left Barnett feeling like he was always chasing the next thing rather than being present; working on this song helped him recognize the value of the here and now. Though critics often label The Menzingers a nostalgic band, Barnett sees their relationship with the past differently — as a way of finding answers to present-day questions, which he says has always been at the core of their songwriting.
The band also recalled an unpleasant incident at a recent show, where one attendee's behavior spoiled the night for others; the band only learned about it the next day. Barnett stressed that their stance on such issues has always been clear to their fans, and that the audience itself handled the situation admirably.
Ahead lies the band's twenty-first birthday, which Barnett jokingly calls the "real" milestone given their long tradition of marking it with big parties. Next year also brings the tenth anniversary of After the Party — and having already celebrated On the Impossible Past's anniversary, the band may do something similar for that record too.
