Finnish kantele player Pauliina Syrjälä, born in 1976 in Kiuruvesi, is a versatile performer who plays the full range of kantele instruments, from the simplest five-string versions to the full 41-string concert kantele. A central part of her work is the near-forgotten tradition of playing kantele with a wooden stick, rooted in the Jooseppi Pohjola kantele. Starting in the 2000s, Pauliina effectively revived this practice, developing her own techniques and repertoire for stick-playing, and her exploration of timbre went further still: she also plays with a knitting needle, a crochet hook, and a paintbrush, drawing electronic-effect-like sounds out of the kantele through purely acoustic means, sometimes turning the instrument into a percussion tool. Her aesthetic ranges from archaic, almost shamanic power music to a contemporary art-music idiom. Her discography includes the solo albums "Monet nävöt" (2005) and "Lunkula" (2016, released by Kansanmusiikki-instituutti), and she performs in several ensembles — the duo Vonkale with Ilona Korhonen, the project Korhonen&Syrjälä, the stick-kantele orchestra Sytyke, and a duo with Latvian kokle player Laima Jansone — touring from North America to Japan and Vietnam. Alongside her performing career, Pauliina teaches at the Sibelius Academy, coordinates the international Nordic Master in Folk Music programme, and, two decades after earning her master's degree, is now working toward a doctorate.
