The Spanish stage has its own version of the classic Broadway musical about a composer and a lyricist whose professional partnership grows into romance. Antonio Banderas, who in recent years has become a prominent figure in Spanish musical theater through his own venue in Málaga, the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, took on staging Tocando Nuestra Canción, the Spanish-language version of the 1979 musical They're Playing Our Song, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager. The production ran through the summer of 2024, from June to July, with Miquel Fernández and María Adamuz as the romantically entangled creative pair.
Two years after the stage run closed, Concord Theatricals Recordings is releasing a studio recording of the Spanish cast — the fourth such project Banderas has made with the label, joining his earlier Spanish-language cast recordings of A Chorus Line, Company, and Godspell. Music direction and conducting came from Arturo Díez-Boscovich, while the production team alongside Banderas himself included Manolo Toro, who also handled recording and mixing, and Sean Patrick Flahaven; mastering was done by Oscar Zambrano.
