Colombian-Canadian singer Lido Pimienta releases her fifth studio album, "Caribenya" — a portmanteau of "Caribe" and the name of Irish new-age artist Enya. Pimienta openly admires Enya as a figure who stays out of scandal and lives reclusively in her castle with her animals and piano, calling her an aspirational example. Yet the album is far from a direct imitation of the "Watermark" aesthetic: Enya's influence surfaces subtly — in the foggy, dreamlike atmosphere of certain tracks, in harp textures, and in mystical soundscapes. The album's core sound instead draws on Caribbean rhythms: cumbia on "Tóxica," dembow on "Marea," Tropicália on "Talento," and dancehall elements on the duet with Nelly Furtado, "Hoy Por Tí." Puerto Rican artist Ana Macho contributes a rap verse on "Libélula." The track "Marea" addresses the appropriation of Caribbean musical culture by outsiders — including Madonna — and Pimienta stresses that for her, the Caribbean is tied above all to Blackness and Indigeneity rather than to European colonial heritage. "Caribenya" serves as a counterpoint to Pimienta's 2025 album "La Belleza," on which she decolonized European classical music by drawing on Gregorian chant and castrato singing. Where that album demanded intellectual rigor, the new one, in her own words, allowed her to be simpler and have more fun — though classical string elements still appear on select tracks, sitting alongside electronic and mystical textures.
