Ashby Frank's second album for Mountain Home Music Company, Run This Town, arrives July 17 and shows an unusually wide range for bluegrass — spanning the genre's roots and reaching into rock and soul. The record is anchored by classic material: the opening "Blue Night" nods to Bill Monroe and Kirk McGee and has already topped the charts, while a version of the late Terry Baucom's "Knee Deep In Bluegrass" earned an IBMA award. "Everybody's Got Their Nine Pound Hammer" supplies a driving, high-tempo moment.
Alongside that foundation, Frank offers bold cross-genre reworkings: Foo Fighters' "The Pretender," Mark Knopfler's "The Bug," and Amy Winehouse's "Valerie" are all filtered through bluegrass instrumentation. A further strand of the album draws on country and Americana songwriting — Leigh Nash and Connie Harrington's "God Gave Me Horses," the little-known "She Believes" by Jared Tyler, and the title track "Run This Town," co-written with Jack McKeon. Featuring melancholy pedal steel from Steve Hinson, that song paints a portrait of faded dreams and quiet disappointment set against a gently swaying rhythm.
