Manos Milonakis, a Thessaloniki-based composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, releases his debut album "The Seagull" on the Piano and Coffee Records label. This is a musical adaptation of his original score for Anton Chekhov's play of the same name, directed by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos at theaters in Greece and Romania.
The composition emerged while Milonakis was preparing a production for Craiova's National Theatre in Romania. The impressions gathered from the Romanian experience—post-communist atmosphere, picturesque streets, the contrast between darkness and vibrancy, rich sensory details, and the warmth of local people—became woven into the musical fabric that gives voice to the classic Russian dramatic work.
The album comprises thirteen tracks that interweave sorrowful piano melodies, soaring strings, delicate electronic tones, and atmospheric soundscapes. The compositions form a cohesive whole, functioning like communicating vessels, accompanying romantic encounters, philosophical dialogues, family conflicts, and unexpected departures. Milonakis's music unveils the subtext of Chekhov's play—a world of disappointments, unfulfilled aspirations, and unrequited love.
Although the score was created in 2015 (preceding his earlier work "Festen"), Milonakis waited for the right moment to release it. Continuous revisitation of the recordings, concert performances of the compositions, and an inner conviction about sharing his work with the world led the composer to Denmark. There, several piano parts were re-recorded, and the complete album underwent remixing at a Danish studio under sound engineer Ed Carlsen's direction.
The release of "The Seagull" took place on March 13, 2020, on the Piano and Coffee Records label. The album is available in a limited edition on compact disc and in digital format with visual artwork by British artist Jordan Amy Lee.
