This rare masterpiece, recorded by Decca in May 1955—the year after Karl Böhm (1894–1981) assumed his second term as General Director of the Vienna State Opera (having first held the position from 1943 to 1945)—is now being released for the first time on SA-CD.

While Böhm is generally best known for his 1964 recording of *The Magic Flute* with the Berlin Philharmonic for DG, this Decca recording—featuring a cast assembled from the main performers who had actually appeared in productions at the Vienna State Opera even before his appointment as General Director—holds significant importance.

It captures a performance by a cast that closely mirrors the live production, and—as with Peter Andrey’s other recordings—the sound engineering by Peter Andrey, who produced the stereo version, avoids a spectacular, stage-show-style recording with elaborate set movements, opting instead for an approach that evokes a live stage performance (a style also shared in part by his later opera recordings for EMI).

It should be noted that at the time, Decca assigned different producers and engineers to its monaural and stereo recordings (the producers for the monaural version of *The Magic Flute* included Victor Olof and others).

This means there are two versions of the same recording, but this reissue uses the stereo version.
The cover design is based on the striking monaural version from the original release.
This original release is renowned for being extremely rare on the market.

Böhm’s Mozart recordings—not limited to opera—include multiple recordings of the same piece even in his very late years, and all of them are of overwhelming value.

Böhm’s conducting, even beyond Mozart, was based on a consistent and unshakable set of values regarding the music and the composers, and he never wavered from this throughout his life.

Although there are many performers in the opera repertoire and many variables in various contexts, all of his recordings reign as masterpieces.

This 1955 Decca recording is, first and foremost, astonishing for its quality—which remains relevant even today despite being an early stereo recording—but the level of performance at that time is also worthy of special mention.

The lineup of Viennese singers at the time was exceptional, and the sound of the Vienna Philharmonic was overwhelmingly captivating; furthermore, it is significant that this was the period when Böhm was at his creative peak (his relationship with the orchestra deteriorated the following year, leading to his resignation).

1955 was a year in which Decca made several important opera recordings, including the opening performance at the rebuilt Vienna State Opera in November.

It was also the year stereo recording began in Vienna, giving it monumental significance.

With this reissue from the original master tapes in Germany, you’ll be able to experience a greater sense of realism and the atmosphere of that era than ever before.
