Trumpeter and singer Henry “Red” Allen’s most powerful studio album of the late 1950s. The recordings were made in the spring of 1957 for RCA Victor and later released on CD as World On A String (the original LP was titled Ride, Red, Ride in Hi-Fi).
Although Allen remains true to the traditions of New Orleans jazz, he sounds surprisingly modern on this album. His energetic trumpet playing is combined with expressive vocals and inspired improvisations. The album’s value is further enhanced by the contribution of an excellent group of musicians: tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, clarinetist Buster Bailey, trombonist J. C. Higginbotham, pianist Marty Napoleon, guitarist Everett Barksdale, bassist Lloyd Trotman, and drummer Cozy Cole. The album naturally combines traditional New Orleans jazz with the more modern sound of swing.
