"Untying the Not" is the fourth studio album by American jam band The String Cheese Incident (SCI), released on October 7, 2003, on their independent label, Sci Fidelity Records.
This album marked a turning point in the band's discography: its sound is noticeably darker, deeper, and more melancholy than their previous works, largely due to the death of a close friend, as well as the general uneasy mood in the world of the early 2000s.
In contrast to SCI's earlier, lighter acoustic style, this release is a dark, conceptual psychedelic album. The record was produced by Youth (Martin Glover), known for his work with Killing Joke, The Verve, and Pink Floyd. He introduced elements of trance, electronic percussion, and dense atmospheric layers to the band's sound, while maintaining their signature improvisational guitar and mandolin parts.
