Opera for the Dead (祭歌) is a large-scale multimedia production at the intersection of contemporary classical music, electronics, and visual arts, created by composers Mindy Meng Wang and Monica Lim. The project is envisioned as a Chinese cyber-opera inspired by traditional Chinese mourning customs and funeral rituals reimagined for the technological era. The musical framework of the piece is built on a unique combination of acoustic instruments (the ancient Chinese guzheng, cello, percussion), live vocals, and sophisticated digital technologies, including electronic processing and spatial ambisonic sound. The production breaks the barriers of classical theater, inviting audiences to move freely through a performance space that dynamically transforms from a stage into a cinema screen with 3D animation and a dance floor. Conceptually, the opera explores the dichotomy between the spiritual and the material, contrasting sacred traditions with digital convenience. It examines the fragile line between genuine grief and its ritualistic performance, blending the dark aesthetics of the macabre with moments of profound beauty.
