Sub Re is a new album by composer Kassel Jaeger, released on the Shelter Press label. The work continues his exploration of concrete music within the paradigm of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (a studio he has directed since 2018).
Conceptually, the album develops the idea of sound as an immanent phenomenon—not transformed into ideal forms, but existing in its material, physical nature. The title Sub Re references the Latin meaning "under matter" and a philosophical idea that reality and intuition emerge at the subconscious, invisible level.
Musically, the album is a collage of heterogeneous sound sources: acoustic instruments, electronic textures, natural and synthetic tones, found and deliberately created materials. These sounds are organized into a complex, multilayered structure, creating a dynamic portrait of the interplay between density and tenuity, memory and the present moment.
Several tracks emerged from specific historical events: some were performed at Latifa Echakhch's installation in the Swiss Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale, while others were presented at the first Sound Biennale in Sion, 2023. The closing track signalmirror completes the cycle, fitting organically into the conceptual whole.
The album draws inspiration from a chapter in Victor Hugo's novel Toilers of the Sea, where the protagonist faces an impossible task in solitude amid the forces of the ocean. This metaphor defines the project's essence: actions, decisions, and creative revelations emerge at the invisible, material level, beneath the surface of consciousness.
