The ZANDO BEATZ project, created by French and Congolese producers in collaboration with the local underground, is a unique sonic snapshot of nightlife in Kinshasa. Recorded by producer DJ Fantôme in a makeshift studio right in the middle of the chaotic Zandu market, this release captures the aggressive yet highly creative energy of the Congolese streets. The central axis of the first part of the project is the Zagé style — a marginal and uncompromising style of club music born at the intersection of traditional oral culture and radical electronic mutation.
Instead of professional artists, the tracks feature real members of Kinshasa's street gangs and Atalaku (street griots), whose raw, unvarnished rapping is layered over high-speed hybrid beats. The musical fabric of the release is woven from elements of coupé-décalé, kuduro, trance, and harsh ghetto techno, interspersed with tribal samples and urban noise pollution. DJ Fantôme himself maintains strict anonymity, performing in a mask and constantly changing aliases, which surrounds the project with a mystique of urban legends. Ultimately, the album functions not merely as dancefloor material, but as an authentic audio documentary detailing the lives of outcasts, pickpockets, and street prophets in the Congolese capital.
