The first overture is a supplement to the original LP. What a great piece Foroni has written! The overture is somehow reminiscent of the Swedish national anthem. Foroni came from Italy and spent most of his short life working on the Swedish opera house.
The piece by Berwald is intended as an operetta, but is a fully-fledged orchestral piece in the best Berwald style. Even Norman (in the Schumann style) is a meaningful piece in which the Swedish anthem is already present. Kraus' conclusion to the CD is not exactly romantic, but the CD ends less with bravura and more with an idyllic and Mozart-like tone.
