In 1979, experienced Harlem record store owner and producer Bobby Robinson set out to scout talent in the emerging Bronx hip-hop scene. Utilizing family connections through his nephew Spoonie Gee, he signed short-term contracts with Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One More. The resulting releases, including the iconic 12-minute single "Superappin’", showcased the authentic, underground sound of early rap as opposed to the commercial success of "Rapper’s Delight". Despite having a sound too raw for national charts, the record achieved impressive sales in New York and gave a powerful momentum to the entire local rap culture.
