The self-titled debut album by the Roman band Grosso Autunno (released by EMI Italiana in December 1976) is a hidden gem of the 1970s Italian scene.
Although Universal included the release in its iconic "Prog Rock Italia" archival series when it was reissued in 2021, it's hard to call this music pure progressive rock in the traditional sense (like Banco or PFM). It's a much more delicate, song-driven, and acoustic work.
The album's music is primarily built around beautiful polyphonic vocals and intertwined acoustic guitars. In mood and presentation, Grosso Autunno are close to American folk-rock in the spirit of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but with a distinctly Italian, Mediterranean flavor, melancholy, and poetry characteristic of the cantautori (singer-songwriter) movement of the era.
