George Michael, born Georgios Kyriakos Panagiotou (London, 25 June 1963 – Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, 25 December 2016), was a two-time Grammy Award-winning British singer and songwriter of Greek descent, who rose to fame in the 1980s when he formed the pop duo Wham! with former schoolmate Andrew Ridgeley in 1981. He is known for his worldwide hits such as Last Christmas and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, and his albums Faith (1987) and Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 (1990). Michael has sold over 100 million records worldwide. His debut solo album, Faith (1987), has sold around 20 million copies worldwide. Seven of his singles reached number one in his native United Kingdom, and he reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 eight times, including Careless Whisper and Freedom! '90. Michael is one of the best-selling British artists of all time, and was named the 40th best-selling artist of all time by Billboard magazine. He has won numerous music awards over a 30-year career, including three Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist twice), four MTV Video Music Awards, four Ivor Novello Awards, three American Music Awards, and two of his eight Grammy nominations. As an openly gay man, George Michael was a prominent supporter of the gay community and a leading figure in the fight against AIDS. In 2004, the Radio Academy listed his songs as the most-played on British radio between 1984 and 2004. The 2005 documentary film A Different Story chronicled Michael's life and career. In 2006, he resumed touring after a 15-year hiatus, embarking on the 25 Live world tour, which continued to sell out concerts until 2008, achieving commercial success.
He died at his home in Oxfordshire on 25 December 2016, aged 53.
