Flamen Dialis – Symptome-Dei is the only studio album by the French underground project Flamen Dialis, recorded in 1978 and released in 1979 in a limited edition of just 1,000 copies on the private label F.D. Project.
The band's name derives from Latin and means "Priest of Jupiter" (the highest flamen in ancient Rome). The album is a cult holy grail for collectors of rare European avant-garde music: the original vinyl is currently valued at hundreds of euros, and in 2016, the album was officially reissued by the iconic SouffleContinu Records.
The project was led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Didier Glassler. He assembled a band of eight musicians who utilized a vast arsenal of instruments: in addition to the standard electric guitars and bass, the album features flute, saxophone, acoustic piano, Korg synthesizer, oboe, tambourine, and bells.
The album presents a single, continuous conceptual flow, divided into two untitled vinyl sides ("Face A" and "Face B"), which are further subdivided into smaller, interconnected subthemes ("Symptome-Dei," "L'Autre," "La Folie").
