First Time Around is the debut release from Serbian-born guitarist Vladimir Redzic. Rather than chasing innovation for its own sake, Redzic plants himself firmly within the tradition of straight-ahead jazz guitar, drawing deeply from the Great American Songbook and the melodic clarity of players such as Grant Green and Kenny Burrell. The result is a polished, enjoyable record that values tone, interplay and atmosphere over showmanship.
Redzic’s musical path gives the album much of its character. Born in Belgrade and relocating to Canada in 2003 before moving to New York in 2024, he combines European discipline with North American jazz sensibilities. A guitarist since the age of nine, he completed Grade 8 classical guitar through the Royal Conservatory of Music, later studying privately for two years with acclaimed jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein. That grounding is apparent throughout First Time Around, where every phrase feels carefully shaped rather than casually thrown off.
Recorded live off the floor with all the musicians in the same room, the album captures an intimacy and spontaneity that’s particularly pleasing to hear. Pianist Steve Ash is central to its success, bringing elegance and maturity to every track. His opening interpretation of the verse to “I’ve Got a Crush on You” immediately establishes the album’s understated mood before Redzic enters with his warm, clean tone.
The first half of the album benefits greatly from the presence of drummer Steve Little, whose résumé includes work on Duke Ellington recordings such as And His Mother Called Him Billand Second Sacred Concert. On “With a Song in My Heart”, Little’s cymbal work provides a relaxed swing that never feels forced, while bassist Jonathan Meyer keeps the rhythm section fluid and supportive.
Among the highlights is “Bishop’s Gambit”, Redzic’s lone original composition, dedicated to mentor and guitarist Ben Bishop. The title cleverly references both Bishop’s surname and Redzic’s passion for competitive chess. Musically, it fits seamlessly beside the standards while hinting at a more personal compositional voice.
The album’s second half shifts into a drumless trio format with bassist Neal Miner, allowing for more conversational interplay. “How Long Has This Been Going On?” is especially effective, opening with a solo guitar introduction that showcases Redzic’s lyrical instincts. Elsewhere, “Chasin’ the Bird” pays tribute to Charlie Parker through intricate guitar-piano counterpoint. At the same time, vocalist Ale Nuñez brings warmth and spontaneity to a single-take rendition of “These Foolish Things”.
First Time Around occasionally feels overly respectful of its influences, but it remains a refined and cohesive debut, performed with sincerity, taste and confidence. That said, I would like to hear more originals from the guitarist, as I do feel that’s where we’ll really find out who Redzic is as an artist. As it is, though, this is an enjoyable album of mostly standards, played with poise and conviction.
