Guitarist Mathieu Torres builds his identity around an engaging mix of technique and personality. His playing on Sanctuaire, his second album under his own name, is recognisable for successfully blending characterful virtuosity with warmth, lyricism and an ability to make a melody feel as though it has something worth saying. His guitar tone is rounded, organic and alive.
Torres is a Toulouse-based guitarist and composer who has been active on the French music scene since 2002, working across an impressively broad range of projects. His musical world spans progressive rock, jazz, experimental music, electronica, punk, ambient, and more, with groups including La Théorie des Cordes, M’Z, Matziz, Zhorhann, and The Diogenes. That restless background perhaps explains why his more personal work feels so open-minded. His influences have ranged from Bill Frisell and Django Reinhardt to Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix and Fred Frith. While those names point towards very different musical territories, Sanctuaire possesses something of that same refusal to recognise unnecessary borders.
Released only a few months after Desconegut, Sanctuaire presents a direct continuation of that debut’s exploration of inner landscapes. Torres describes his compositions as introspective and almost journalistic, with harmonic explorations and improvisations intended to unfold like poems. That may sound rather lofty on paper, but the music itself remains approachable, driven by memorable themes and a strong sense of atmosphere.
The opening “Le Parfum des glycines” immediately establishes the album’s intimate character, with a melodic guitar line that carries an almost conversational quality. “Pyrène” and the excellent “Blue Monday” bring more movement and rhythmic energy, while “Khiónê” and “Des airs de répit” explore the spacious, reflective side of Torres’ writing.
“Le clochard céleste” is a particular highlight, presented here with Jean Baptiste Azanza on double bass and Guy Ould Yahoui on drums. The trio setting gives Torres room to stretch, but the track’s strength lies in the interaction rather than any desire to turn the guitarist into a soloist with accompaniment. It has a genuine live-band energy.
The variety across the 13 tracks is another strength. “Ténéré” brings a groove-conscious world-jazz flavour, while “Sneakers Station” has a more contemporary pulse. “Xana valse” offers something lighter and more graceful, and “Hoia Baciu” provides an atmospheric closing statement. Even the inclusion of “Impressions” feels natural within the album’s broader journey.
Sanctuaire is perhaps best understood as music made by someone who has spent years moving between different musical worlds and has gradually found a personal space within them.
