Demis Roussos was born on June 15, 1946 in Egypt. His father's workplace was nationalized in 1961, so the family moved back to the Greek capital. Roussos spoke eight languages and sang his songs in six: English, Greek, Italian, French, Spanish and German.
He formed his first band as a teenager, and they performed international hits in local clubs.
Together with keyboardist Vangelis Papathanassiou, they formed the band Aphrodite's Child, and achieved their first major success with Rain and Tears in 1968, in Paris, which was in the throes of student riots, after they had left Greece after the 1967 military coup.
Roussos later embarked on a solo career, releasing his first solo album in 1971. His best-known songs include Rain and Tears, We Shall Dance, My Friend the Wind, Goodbye My Love, Goodbye, and Forever and Ever.
He became a defining pop icon of his time, selling over 60 million copies of his 34 albums.
