"Succès et raretés 1963-1969" is an archival digital compilation in the Universal Music France series, covering the key period in the career of Lucky Blondo (born Gérard Blondiot, 23 July 1944, Paris) — one of the notable figures of the French yé-yé scene. Having started out in the cabarets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and received his rock'n'roll baptism alongside Les Chaussettes Noires, Blondo recorded for the Fontana label, where he quickly evolved from twist and madison numbers into a velvet-voiced crooner — the turning point being "Sur ton visage une larme" (1964), the French version of Bobby Solo's "Una lacrima sul viso."
The compilation gathers hits and rarities from the original Fontana EPs: "Avec des si" (1963), "Un garçon, une fille" (1965), "Marie aux yeux candides" and "Chagrin d'amour" (1965), "Jusqu'en septembre" and "C'est bête à pleurer" — the French adaptation of "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" — "Dommage, dommage," as well as late-decade material from the singles "Goodbye Colette" (1968) and "Ma route" (1969). Noteworthy inclusions are "La chanson de Maxence," Michel Legrand's song from Jacques Demy's film "The Young Girls of Rochefort," and "Pense à moi," associated with composer Francis Lai. A significant portion of the tracks are French adaptations of Anglo-American repertoire — typical of the yé-yé era — making this set a valuable document of 1960s French pop.
