Devin Townsend spent ten years creating his new album, which harks back to the lines of ‘Empath’, and also features Steve Vai and Anneke van Giersbergen.
Devin Townsend’s career is characterized by distinct creative worlds, with heavy albums, atmospheric detours and character-focused material. Each has its own logic and mood, but his latest album, ‘The Moth’, is different. It was not born from an existing template, nor was it made for the sake of novelty, but a kind of culmination. A project that was conceived from the beginning in a theatrical framework with a big orchestra, a choir, in a dimension that could emphasize the emotional transformation at the heart of the concept.
The idea for the 24-song material was born as a vague idea a good ten years ago, but Devin always subconsciously considered it the magnum opus of his life. Then, about six years ago, after an acoustic concert in Amsterdam, the leader of the Noord Nederlands Orkest symphony orchestra approached him with an offer: crown his extensive discography with the monumentality of a large orchestra. That was the moment when ‘The Moth’ began to turn from an idea into a reality, and on May 29, after more than a decade of work, the album will finally be released on Inside Out Music.

Today’s announcement coincided with the official video debut of the trailer for Enter The City, which Devin said: “A loosely woven story about someone who realizes that their old patterns of behavior no longer serve them. As they delve into themselves and confront their own inner world, an inner conflict that they have been resisting or subconsciously believing to be justified for years comes to the surface. Enter The City is set at the beginning of this story arc.”

The album features contributions from Darby Todd, Mike Keneally, James Leach, Steve Vai, Anneke van Giersbergen and Lynn Wu (Ou), orchestral arrangements by Joseph Stevenson and Niels Bye Nielsen, and graphic design by Travis Smith and Eliran Kantor.

The material consists of three parts. In addition to the album, the version with symphony orchestra and choir, titled ‘The Moth – The Afterlife’, and the first live performance recorded in the Netherlands in March last year, titled ‘The Moth – The War’. In light of this, it is not surprising that several formats will be released (these have not yet been released in Hungary). There will be a jewel case CD – on which ‘The Moth’ itself can be heard –, a limited double digipak CD – with ‘The Moth – The Afterlife’ on the bonus disc –, an artbook – which contains all three parts on 3 CDs and a Blu-ray of the concert film of the live performance, as well as the Dolby Atmos and HiRes versions of the studio recordings. There will of course also be a vinyl version – with an LP-sized booklet – in black and translucent-black marbled colors.
