By the spring of 1980, Reba Rambo stood as one of the foremost figures in contemporary Christian music. Following her breakthrough debut Lady in 1976, she had amassed two Grammy nominations, a Dove Award, and three additional nominations from the Gospel Music Association. Mainstream publications increasingly recognized her commercial appeal beyond the CCM market, drawing comparisons to Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross.
Dreamin' was recorded at Nashville's Sound Stage Studio and produced by Phil Johnson and Dony McGuire. It marked Reba's final album for the Benson Company, released in April 1980 — the same month she signed with the West Coast label Light Records.
The album showcases the stylistic breadth of her mature period, ranging from polished pop ballads to jazz-inflected arrangements. Highlights include her own reading of "Lead Us Not Into Temptation" (previously recorded by Andraé Crouch), the radio single "Something About the Rain," and a family collaboration with Buck and Dottie Rambo on "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow." The album's centrepiece is the four-part "Dressing Room Sketch" — an extended audio drama interwoven with music that became one of the release's defining talking points.
Upon its original release, Contemporary Christian Music magazine hailed it as possibly the finest work of her career. In 2024, Sony Legacy issued a remaster of the album to mark its 44th anniversary, making it available digitally for the first time — remastered from the original tapes by Greg Hand.
