Louisa County Blues marks a return by Corey Harris — MacArthur "genius grant" recipient and one of the defining figures of 1990s acoustic blues — to the purest roots of the tradition. The album was cut with the unit Harris calls his trio: alongside the leader's guitar and vocals are Hook Herrera on harmonica and Lino Muoio on mandolin. The repertoire reworks classic country and Delta blues — drawing on the legacy of Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, Bukka White and Fred McDowell, as well as gospel material — rounded out by a handful of originals, including the title track and the closing La Vida Mas Hermosa.
Conceptually it is a deliberate rejection of modern studio technique: Harris set out to make the record "the old-fashioned way" — live, with no overdubs or edits, captured over two days in the studio. The title nods to Louisa County in Virginia, near Charlottesville where the musician lives, grounding the record in a specific geography of the American South. Long available only as a limited edition for backers of its crowdfunding campaign, the album now reaches a wider audience through the Italian label Bloos Records, a specialist in blues, folk and adjacent styles that has already issued Harris's recent work.
