"Africa" is a cult album by Italian composer Piero Umiliani, released in 1972. The record was originally released under his renowned stage name, M. Zalla.
Considered a masterpiece of library music, it was ahead of its time, blending avant-garde electronics with ethnic influences.
The album combines jazz, funk, psychedelic ambient, progressive rock, and traditional African percussion.
Umiliani made extensive use of the Moog synthesizer, marimba, hypnotic piano riffs, and complex rhythmic structures.
The record perfectly captures the atmosphere of so-called "exotica" and the cinematic sound characteristic of Italian cinema of the 1970s.
