"Echoes in the Weave" is the debut album by the project Sareban, led by multi-instrumentalist Mathieu Clavel, following a decade of apprenticeship under Ustad Daud Khan Sadozai. The record features original compositions for the Afghan rubab that expand the instrument's expressive range while remaining strictly within the traditional modal frameworks of Afghanistan and North India. Eschewing electronics and Western hybridization, the album focuses on the organic sound of the rubab, complemented by contributions from master percussionists from Afghanistan, India, Turkey, and Iran. Clavel’s work seeks a middle path, enriching the rubab's repertoire through new material that remains faithful to its authentic spirit and musical grammar.
