Cowboy Simple is the self-titled debut full-length album by the Sydney-based collective Cowboy Simple, released in 2026 on the Australian independent label and production house Personal Best Records. The project is the creative partnership of two long-standing figures of Sydney's funk and groove scene — Roland Kapferer (lead vocals) and Josh Beagley (guitars, keyboards, production) — previously known for their work together in SWOOP and Professor Groove & The Booty Affair. The record also features a recurring cast of guest vocalists including Xanthe, Ricky Nifo, Juanita Tippins and Chloe West, alongside a broader ensemble of instrumentalists from the Sydney and Byron Bay scenes.
The band's self-described stylistic palette — "country funk, southern-fried disco and truckstop soul" — references the funk-inflected country tradition of the late 1960s through the mid-1970s and its later disco mutations. Their openly acknowledged touchstones are The Band, The Meters, Little Feat, Billy Preston, Glen Campbell, JJ Cale and the Exile on Main St.-era Rolling Stones; each surfaces on the album in the form of wah-wah guitars, pedal steel, Wurlitzer and Fender Rhodes electric pianos, octave disco basslines and a relaxed 100 BPM groove feel.
Thematically, the album explores the mythology of "old America" — romanticised images of the road, the river, the ranch and the entanglements of love, where place and origin shape the drama of emotion. It extends the narrative arc of the project's earlier singles ("Wichita Lineman", "River Don't Lie (To Me)", "Rollin' On") into a fully formed statement: from the opening "Rollin' On" with Ricky Nifo, through the Xanthe-featuring "Winter In Montana" and their reading of Rosanne Cash's "Seven Year Ache", to the reflective closer "If I Can Make It On My Own". The album was recorded at Personal Best Studios and The Nest in Sydney, as well as Rocking Horse Studios in Byron Bay; engineering was handled by Paul Pilseniks, with additional production, mixing and mastering by Ashley Cadell, and executive production by Andrew Gordon.
