Russian Songs and Gypsy Romances is the debut solo album by singer and actress Jelena Jangfeldt-Jakubovitch (born in Moscow in 1948, later emigrated to Sweden), originally released by the Swedish state label Caprice Records in 1981 and reissued digitally on 24 November 2017 through Naxos Sweden. The recording was made at Studio 2 of Swedish Radio (Sveriges Radio) in Stockholm on 27 and 31 October and 3 November 1980.
The album presents a carefully curated programme drawn from two intersecting strands of Russian-language vocal tradition: on one hand, the bardic-poetic art-song repertoire setting verses by Boris Pasternak, Bulat Okudzhava, and Fyodor Tyutchev; on the other, the Romani romance, rooted in Russian folk melodies and in Russian-language poems on Romani themes, notably those of Apollon Grigoryev. Most pieces are sung in Russian; three songs — including "Visa om Mozart" and "François Villons bön" after Okudzhava, and "Jag mötte er" after Tyutchev — appear in Swedish translations by the Slavist and translator Bengt Jangfeldt (the singer's husband).
The instrumental fabric rests on the guitar duo of Oleg and Rimma Gotskosik, supported by Jan Hellberg on guitar — the characteristic seven- and six-string Russian-Romani guitar technique providing an authentic sonority of the Moscow urban-gypsy tradition of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, an era when Moscow's musical life was substantially shaped by Romani culture. Jangfeldt-Jakubovitch's voice combines the dramatic delivery of a trained actress with the intimate, chamber-scale intonation typical of the "gypsy romance" as a salon form. The release remains the singer's sole album and documents a singular stylistic bridge between Russian poetic song, the Moscow-school Romani romance, and the Scandinavian context of émigré culture.
