Currents / Volume 4 is the fourth installment in Third Coast Percussion's ongoing EP series, launched in 2022 as part of their Currents Creative Partnership initiative — an annual laboratory for early-career and experimental composers venturing, often for the first time, into the world of acoustic percussion.
At the heart of the record is the monumental six-movement cycle The Threshold We Cross with Closed Eyes by New Zealand composer Gemma Peacocke, commissioned by TCP in 2021 with support from Creative New Zealand. The thirty-minute work for percussion quartet and electronics draws on archival recordings of Americans recounting stories of historical arrival from the Library of Congress digital archives, weaving sampled voices, percussive timbres, and electronic layers into a meditation on memory, trauma, and belonging. The six movements — "Wolf," "Prophecy," "Indictment," "The Fall," "Nowhere," and "A Field Guide to Love and Wreckage" — trace a sustained emotional arc that is as politically charged as it is formally inventive. The work received its world premiere at the Library of Congress in October 2021 and now finds its definitive recorded form on this album.
Alongside Peacocke's cycle, the album includes Double Drum Dutch by Ayanna Woods — a Chicago-born composer and bandleader whose writing for TCP gleefully inhabits the fertile ground between drumline energy, playground games, and chamber precision. The third work, Contact Lite, rounds out the program, likely representing a new Currents Creative Partnership commission from TCP's 2025–26 season.
