CHESS the Musical (2025 Broadway Cast Recording) documents the long-awaited Broadway revival that opened at the Imperial Theatre on November 16, 2025 — the first English-language cast recording of a fully staged production of the musical since the original Broadway album of 1988.
With music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a substantially rewritten book by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong, the musical sets a politically charged Cold War chess tournament at the center of a love triangle between an American and a Soviet grandmaster. The American champion Freddie Trumper was conceived as a loose portrait of Bobby Fischer, while the Soviet grandmaster Anatoly Sergievsky draws on elements from the careers of Viktor Korchnoi and Anatoly Karpov.
The recording features Nicholas Christopher as Anatoly alongside Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit as Freddie and Lea Michele as Florence, under the direction of Michael Mayer, choreography by Lorin Latarro, and music direction by Ian Weinberger. The orchestrations by Anders Eljas and Brian Usifer lend the album a particularly lush, full-bodied sound — strings and brass adding depth and grandeur to a score that broke house records at the Imperial Theatre from its opening weeks. Critics largely agreed that the Andersson–Ulvaeus score remains the production's undeniable crown jewel, its music having long outlasted the musical's complicated stage history.
