Mal ("home" in Kurdish) is AySay's third studio album, released on 27 March 2026 via V2 Records. The record explores the intimate space between tenderness and resistance, where personal stories intertwine with broader global struggles. Vocalist, composer and lyricist Luna Bülow Ersahin — born to a Danish mother and a Kurdish-Turkish father — sings in Turkish, Kurdish and Danish, weaving together propulsive guitar lines, folk-rooted melodies and trance-like grooves.
The album draws on an eclectic lineage spanning Turkish rock icons Barış Manço, Selda Bağcan and Altin Gün as well as Nordic trailblazers Björk and Eivør. Rather than a collection of singles, Mal unfolds as an immersive, continuous journey: Anatolian folk elements, Kurdish rhythmic patterns and cool Nordic electronics interlock organically into a sound that resists easy categorisation. Tracks such as «Den Om En Mand (Haline Bak)» blend Oriental scales with British-inflected psychedelic rock riffs; «Yârimisin» echoes the baglama mastery of Derya Yıldırım; while «Lawiko» veers into meditative, chant-like territory reminiscent of Tibetan monastic music.
Thematically, the album is shaped by questions of identity, displacement, longing and belonging — the experience of standing at the crossroads of cultures. AySay have forged a postmodern form of ethno-pop that merges languages, rhythmic systems, harmonic traditions and vocal techniques into a multicultural whole that never feels contrived. The trio are four-time winners of the Danish Music Awards Roots, including Album of the Year for Su Akar (2022) and KÖY (2024), and recipients of the Carl Prisen Award as Roots Composer of the Year.
