Bassist Tyler Mitchell recently returned to New York City after a ten-year hiatus. Before leaving New York, Mitchell was one of the finest bassists on the scene, recording numerous albums and touring with legends such as Art Taylor's Wailors, Barry Harris, Steve Grossman, and many others. On this bristling live date, Mitchell performed at Smalls Jazz Club, collaborating with a band of younger musicians, including the brilliant tenor (and former Art Taylor alum) Abe Burton, drummer Eric McPherson, pianist Spike Wilner, and the young trumpet virtuoso Josh Evans. This is an entertaining set of catchy originals and vibrant standards.
