Ed Sanders' album "Poems for New Orleans" is a musical manifestation of his "investigative poetry" cycle, inspired by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The work is closely intertwined with his large-scale project on American history in verse, combining profound historical analysis with references to mythology and the works of William Blake. The musical accompaniment, arranged by Mark Bingham, ranges from the minimalist use of traditional New Orleans motifs to vocal experiments featuring Susan Cowsill. Despite the structural clumsiness of the longer tracks and questionable vocal techniques in solo numbers, the disc represents an ambitious synthesis of the poetic word, surreal narrative, and historical reflection.
