VA - Club Dread - Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2004)

The goofy comedy of the films by the Broken Lizard comedy troupe doesn't necessarily seem like it would lend itself to good music, but the soundtrack to Club Dread proves otherwise. Instead of the suburban mall-punk or hip-hop that shows up on many soundtracks to comedies, this album features classic reggae and ska from Derrick Harriott, Dillinger, and Yellowman. Highlights include Toots & the Maytals' "Funky Kingston" and "Broadway Jungle," Desmond Dekker & the Cherry Pies' "King of Ska," and Dillinger's "Cocaine in My Brain." Lee Perry & the Soulettes' "Rub & Squeeze" and Bob Marley & the Wailers' "Shocks of Mighty" are some of the other standout tracks on the album, along with Felix da Housecat's remix of Yellowman's "Party." While the collection might be too focused on vintage reggae for some fans of the style's more recent music, Club Dread is still a solid collection of reggae and arguably more entertaining than the movie it supports.~Club Dread Review by Heather Phares
