Chiemi Eri - Kita Kara Minami Kara / Chiemi No Minyōshū Vol.2 (1959)

BAND/ARTIST: Chiemi Eri

Chiemi Eri's 1959 album Kita Kara Minami Kara serves as an anthology of Japanese folk songs (minyō) collected from across the nation. The record is distinguished by its synthesis of traditional melodies with orchestral pop arrangements performed by the King Symphonette and the Tropical Melodians, an approach that contributed to the modernization of national folklore.

Eri, who began her career performing on American military bases, gained renown for her ability to seamlessly blend Japanese heritage with Western jazz and pop standards, such as "Tennessee Waltz." As a member of the legendary "Three Sisters" trio and a superstar of mid-20th-century Japanese entertainment, Eri left a significant mark on her country's culture, yet remained largely obscure internationally for decades due to a lack of global distribution.
