In mid-2023, Ian Shirley, representing the OM Swagger label and Ace Records, discovered the Norwegian collective Kronstad 23. The group, consisting of friends residing in different parts of Norway, performs instrumental funk-jazz stylistically reminiscent of the works of Soft Machine, Weather Report, and Keith Jarrett. Despite the musicians convening exclusively for recording purposes, the material demonstrates a high degree of cohesion and musical intuition.
Following the successful review of three demo tracks, the label initiated the release of a full-length album. A second recording session took place in October 2023, featuring a new drummer and a guest brass section. The new compositions maintained the quality standard of the debut recordings. The compilation of materials from both sessions resulted in the formation of a cohesive album of high-quality instrumental jazz.
