The continuation of the retrospective of the concert recordings of the late John Wetton covers the 1990s, when he performed as a solo artist. Featuring eight concerts from that decade in updated or revised versions, this 10-disc set is a treasure trove of material recorded in Japan, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands.
Despite the fact that such an extensive set of performances inevitably repeats songs — especially the most important compositions from his work with Asia, King Crimson and UK — there are many variations in performance and arrangement, and Wetton perfectly copes with his role.
Of course, the song Heat Of The Moment by Asia is played at every concert, but often in a modified form, Easy Money by Crimson regularly appears, and British fans hear In The Dead Of Night at most performances.
The album has a lot of solo work and a few surprises. The 1994 recording of Heart Of The Dragon featured Bob Dalton and John Beck from It Bites; there are many songs from Wetton's solo album Voice Mail, and there is also a beautiful version of Phenomenon's Did It All For Love.
The third disc from 1995 features an energetic performance accompanied by Landmarq progers and Martin Orford keyboards. The vocals of the late Tracey Hitchings also feature prominently on the album.
The three discs are dedicated to two concerts that took place in Japan in 1997, one after the other. At the time, Wetton was touring in support of his Arkangel album, and his band included Dave Kilminster, John Young, and Thomas Lang.
An acoustic show in Milan in 1998 featuring Orford and Kilminster featured some interesting reworked arrangements, as well as an apology from Wetton for his absence the previous evening, as he had just become a father.
The collection ends with a 1999 concert in Japan featuring works created by the musician throughout his career. Hats off to Wetton archivist Rick Nelson for his work in creating such a magnificent piece.
