"Mod Mayday 23" is a conceptual release by Sharp Pins, the solo project of Kai Slater (known for the band Lifeguard), released in the fall of 2024. The album serves as a tribute and reimagining of the cult live compilation "Mods Mayday 79," which documented performances by second-wave mod revival bands (such as Secret Affair, Squire, and Beggar). Slater transforms these classic tracks, infusing them with a lo-fi, power pop sound reminiscent of garage demos by The Nerves. The release combines nostalgia for late-70s aesthetics with the raw energy of the modern underground.
