The film Wild Style (1983), directed by Charlie Ahearn and Fred Braithwaite (Fab Five Freddy), is a seminal documentary capturing the emerging New York hip hop scene of the early 1980s. Considered one of the first hip hop films, it documented the styles, culture, and, most importantly, the music of that era. The film's soundtrack, originally released on Animal Records, remains highly influential and features unique musical creations conceived as a homage to early breakbeats, rather than simply samples. It includes artists such as Double Trouble, Busy Bee, The Cold Crush Brothers, and The Fantastic Freaks. Production was overseen by Chris Stein (of Blondie) and Braithwaite, with Stein also playing guitar and effects, and drummer Lenny "Ferrari" Ferraro and bassist David Harper contributing to the iconic grooves. The soundtrack, featuring scratches by Charlie Chase and Grand Wizard Theodore, became a cornerstone of subsequent hip hop music, frequently sampled and referenced, perfectly encapsulating the essence of the South Bronx scene. To celebrate the film's restoration, Mr Bongo is reissuing the soundtrack as a double LP on vinyl with a newly curated tracklist, including the instrumental album and Kenny Dope's edits, along with collectible extras.
