Cheo (originally released in 1971, remastered edition 2025) is a landmark work in the history of Latin music, marking the solo debut of José "Cheo" Feliciano following a period of personal struggle and rehabilitation. The album is considered one of the pillars of the "Fania sound," fusing explosive salsa with deeply emotional boleros. An all-star team worked on the record: Johnny Pacheco served as producer, while the great Puerto Rican composer Tite Curet Alonso wrote most of the tracks, including the legendary hit about the love between an indigenous woman and a conquistador, "Anacaona." Musically, the release demonstrates the rare duality of Cheo's talent: he is equally compelling in powerful dance rhythms (guaguancó) and lyrical ballads, showcasing his signature velvety baritone. The 2025 remaster is sourced from the original analog tapes to capture the full warmth and dynamics of the early 70s studio recording.
