Wajdi Riahi Trio - Zabonprés Sessions (2025)

Wajdi Riahi Trio - Zabonprés Sessions (2025)

BAND/ARTIST: Wajdi Riahi Trio

The group's leader, Tunisian-born pianist Wajdi Riahi, based in Brussels, collaborates with bassist Basile Rahola and drummer Pierre Hurty. The recording was made in a single take without editing during a residency in the Belgian Ardennes before a small audience, ensuring the honest and immediate sound of a classic jazz trio.

The album consists of five tracks, including new compositions and reimagined older works. The opening piece, "Lella Fatima," is noted for its high energy and Latin American rhythms, while "Adèle" offers a calmer, bass-driven sound. The reviewer notes that the previously released tracks "Mhamdeya" and "Inel Blues" have significantly evolved due to the group's live performance practice, becoming more open and fresh compared to the studio originals. Despite the claimed influence of Mediterranean traditions, the album's style is characterized primarily as "honest jazz" without excessive exoticism.
